Women’s issues in the news so far this month (it’s not even halfway through) have run the gamut from abortion to sports leadership to religious freedom to sexual harassment.
Abortion. On the abortion front, the Florida Supreme Court attempted to straddle a volatile issue in an election year: a 6-week abortion ban. Six weeks! Most women don’t even know if they are pregnant within 6 weeks. If you know, you know. It issued two decisions taken together seemingly punting the issue to the voters. The Florida Supreme Court upheld the 6-week ban, finding that the Florida’s constitutional right to privacy does not extend to women’s health care decisions. In a related opinion, the Florida Supreme Court allowed a vote on a constitutional amendment to expand abortion access. Whether restrictions on voting rights have the effect of negating the desire for women to have bodily autonomy remains to be seen.
